Events
May was a busy month for the Ocean School team. We traveled across the eastern provinces to attend several conferences and events that not only allowed us to meet some amazing people but also to share our ocean knowledge with more than 1700 teachers, students, ocean professionals and ocean enthusiasts. People of all ages were able to explore our interactive resources, try out the giant-floor map of Canada and take action to protect the ocean.
Take a look at the conferences and events we have attended in recent weeks!
Our first stop was in Moncton for a New Brunswick Teacher Association Middle Level Council Day on May 5. Our team presented a workshop to teachers to explore Ocean School's interdisciplinary multi-media resources and activities. Together they traveled through time and explored Ocean School's latest collections on plastic pollution.
Throughout May, Ocean School also had the chance to share The Ocean, Freshwater and Us giant-floor map and Ocean Week Canada augmented reality app with primary and secondary students at various Youth Fusion events held in Quebec and Montreal on May 8, 9, 18 and 31.
On May 18, our team traveled to Ottawa to attend the Canadian Association of Science Centres (CASC) Conference. There, we offered an interactive session where participants had the opportunity to experience The Ocean, Freshwater and Us giant-floor map and Ocean Week Canada augmented reality app. Participants were invited to share their ideas for how the map and app could be used by museums in their exhibitions and outreach activities.
From May 20 to 22, the Ocean School team attended the JUNIOR Festival at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. In collaboration with the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition, Ocean School invited children of all ages to explore The Ocean, Freshwater and Us giant-floor map through games and activities.
On May 27, ocean professionals and ocean enthusiasts had the opportunity to visit Ocean School’s booth at the Canadian Network for Ocean Education (CaNOE) Ocean Education Symposium in Halifax. Our team was happy to discuss how we can all learn from and with the ocean and share our resources.
Our last trip was in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, from June 1 to June 2 where our team attended Oceans Research in Canada Alliance (ORCA) and School’s Festival to kick off Ocean Week celebrations. During Ocean School sessions, students and teachers were invited to participate in activities on The Ocean, Freshwater and Us giant-floor map and try Ocean Week Canada augmented reality app with the guidance of our team.
