Ocean School Workshop at ISTE 2024

published May 30, 2024

Ocean School is thrilled to be presenting the Ocean, Freshwater, and Us giant floor map and augmented reality app at the ISTE 2024 conference in Denver, Colorado! Join Education Producer Emily Sheepy and teacher advisory group member Chris Webb from Lester B Pearson School Board in Quebec for a fun and interactive session on using AR to engage students.

The Ocean, Freshwater and Us allows students to use a range of tools such as interactive visualizations, 3D models, and animated maps to explore the world around them. It encourages them to think critically about the water systems which make up their environment at the same time as exploring the human impact.

Attendees will get to experience the huge augmented reality map for themselves, and hear how Chris used the app and map experience to promote students’ curiosity and build information literacy.

Session description

Let the ocean be your classroom: supporting environmental inquiry with augmented reality

Take an augmented reality (AR) field trip on a gym-sized floor map, The Ocean, Freshwater, and Us, at the ISTE conference in Denver, Colorado. The AR app combines powerful storytelling techniques & immersive technologies to strengthen ocean knowledge. Join this session, brainstorm with us, & walk away with ideas and resources for using AR for environmental education.

Here's what you're going to get from joining us:

  • Hands-On Tips and Tricks: Dive right into the cool world of AR technology with us! You'll pick up awesome ways to use interactive visualizations, 3D models, and animated maps that'll totally captivate your students across a bunch of different subjects.

  • Exploring Data with AR: We'll show you how AR can turn complex data into something your students can see, touch, and understand. It's all about making tricky topics like geography, biology, and environmental science super clear and engaging.

  • Sparking Curiosity and Deep Thinking: Get ready to light up your students' curiosity! We're all about using AR to tackle real-world challenges, from understanding the planet's water systems to the societal impacts they have. It's all about asking big questions and seeking out those answers together.

  • Embracing Everyone's Story: Learn how to bring everyone into the conversation with tools and stories that highlight Indigenous knowledge and promote accessibility. It's about making sure every student feels seen, heard, and valued.

  • Classroom Magic Made Easy: Find out how to smoothly weave AR into your lessons with strategies and management tips so your students get the most out of every AR adventure.

Join us to make your classroom the place where learning and fun meet, and leave with a toolbox full of ideas to bring back to your students. Can't wait to see you there!
