Join Exploring By The Seat of your Pants for a field trip to the St. Lawrence River

Virtual | April 19th at 1:00 pm ET

published April 17, 2024
Six people wearing life jackets are standing in a creek. They are all holding onto a large black net, and looking at what’s inside. One person is bent over with their arm outstretched looking for something in the net. Text beside the photo reads: “Livestream. Live Fish Research with the River Institute. April 19, 2024. Starts at 1pm ET.”

Exploring By The Seat of Your Pants and NFB Education are excited to present a live field trip hosted by researcher Brian Hickey and environmental educator Alanna Akkermans from the River Institute! They will be streaming live from Rotary Creek on April 19th @ 1 ET!

Join in and learn how habitat restoration can help fish populations like the cutlip minnow. Watch and ask questions as biologists from the River Institute sample fish in the creek and teach you how to ID them.

You can register to watch with your class on Youtube, or join in the fun by asking Brian and Alanna your questions. Sign up early to get a live camera spot!

Cristina Charette

Cristina got her B.Sc. in Marine Biology at the Université du Québec à Rimouski. She completed an M.Sc. in Aquatic Ecology from Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). She joined the River Institute as the Education Coordinator in 2015. In addition to working at the River Institute, she is currently a PhD candidate at UQAM in Dr. Alison Derry lab in partnership with the River Institute. Cristina’s PhD research addresses how environmental conditions can modulate the impacts of invasive species on the St. Lawrence River food web.

Alanna Akkermans

Alanna completed her undergraduate degree in Human Environment at Concordia University in 2020. She first started at the River Institute in 2021 as a summer student, and became an Educator/Biologist in 2022. Alanna loves animals, her favourite animal is a tie between ring-tailed lemurs and little brown bats.

Brian Hickey

Brian received his graduate training in biology at York University where he studied behavioural and physiological variation of red (Lasiurus borealis) and hoary (Lasiurus cinereus) bats in response to changing environmental conditions. Since then, Brian’s research has involved both basic and applied aspects of this question. His current research efforts are directed at evaluating the responses of fish and wildlife communities to habitat degradation (habitat loss and mercury contamination), restoration efforts and ecological effects of water level variation. In addition to research, he oversees public education and outreach programs at the River Institute.
