It has been a busy few months for the Canadian environmental community. After COP 15 in December in Montreal, the focus has turned from coast to coast as Canada will host the Fifth International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC5) in Vancouver from February 3-9, 2023.
IMPAC5 is an international forum “that brings together ocean conservation professionals and high-level officials to inform, inspire and act on marine protected areas”. This year, marine professionals will gather in Canada to “chart a course towards protecting 30% of the global ocean by 2030”.
Ocean School is thrilled to participate in this important event and join the conversation about ways to protect our oceans. We are also very excited to share with the IMPAC5 attendees the Ocean, Freshwater and Us Giant Floor Map and its augmented reality app Ocean Week Canada, a project we co-created with our partners the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition and Canadian Geographic Education.

The Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition will also be part of the IMPAC5 program as they will be hosting Live from IMPAC5: Ocean Conservation 4 Schools - “a 15 minutes live presentation from a global young professional leader, followed by 25 minutes of Q & A with participating classrooms” live on Youtube from February 6-9. The Fifth International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC5) is part of the IMPAC congresses, which are a collaboration between the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the chosen host country. IMPAC5 will be well positioned to develop the ways and means to achieve the international ocean, biodiversity and climate change commitments.
