The Great River (Kaniatarowanenneh)
How can we protect river ecosystems? Hosts Lexy Harquail and Maegan Mitchell dive into the story of the St. Lawrence River, a lifeline for many communities—including the Mohawk Nation of Akwesasne, who call the river Kaniatarowanenneh. This important waterway stretches over 3000 kilometres, connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. Get a bird's-eye view of the river from a drone, and learn how modern challenges like shipping and urban development have left their mark on native species. Join researchers from the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne’s Environment Program and Cornwall’s River Institute in the field to study how the river’s changing: measuring water quality, biodiversity, and the movement of invasive species. This collection invites students to engage with ecological and cultural narratives of the Upper Saint Lawrence, helps them understand the river's significance, and inspires climate action.

The Great River (Kaniatarowanenneh) was developed in collaboration with the River Institute and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, and filmed on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee. We offer our gratitude to the Mohawks of Akwesasne for their care for, and teachings about, our earth and our relations. We hope that these resources honour those teachings and inspire youth to appreciate and care for the health of the Great River, and all waterways, recognizing them as vital arteries of life.
